Tumalog Falls spilling over a rock face in Oslob, Cebu

South Cebu · Attractions guide

Things to do near Oslob besides the whale sharks.

The sharks take an hour or two at dawn. The rest of the day is where the south of Cebu shows its character: waterfalls, a sandbar island, Spanish-era stone and a coast road worth taking slowly.

The short answer

Whale sharks first, then spend the rest of the day on the land and the sea.

Most of the best things near Oslob are within an hour’s drive of each other. Heritage sites sit in Oslob town, two waterfalls are inland, a sandbar island is a short boat ride away, and a pair of cascades in Samboan reward a longer drive. Pick two or three rather than all of them, and check opening arrangements locally before you go, since details change.

On the water

Sumilon Island and the sandbar.

Sumilon Island lies off Oslob and is best known for its white sandbar, which shifts with the tides. It is reached by a short boat ride from the Oslob side, which makes it an easy add-on after a morning with the whale sharks. Guides also mention walking trails on the island leading to an old lighthouse. Conditions and access arrangements vary, so confirm on the day.

For a calm, swim-and-sand afternoon it is hard to beat. Go in the morning or late afternoon for softer light and fewer people, and bring reef-safe sun protection.

Heritage

The Cuartel ruins and Oslob church.

In the centre of Oslob, beside the Nuestra Señora de la Inmaculada Concepción church, stand the Cuartel ruins: a colonnade of thick coral-stone arches open to the sky. Local sources say work on the barracks began in 1898, the last year of Spanish rule, and stopped when the Americans arrived, so the walls never received a roof.

The church is described as one of the older churches in Cebu, with a foundation dated to around 1830 in some sources, although accounts of its later history differ. It is an active place of worship, so dress modestly and be quiet during services. It may be closed outside mass times. A heritage walk usually takes an hour or two, and early morning or late afternoon gives the kindest light. Entry to the ruins is described as free, with voluntary donations toward upkeep.

Inland

Tumalog Falls, plus the Samboan cascades.

Tumalog Falls is the classic Oslob waterfall: a curtain of water over a rock face, reached by a short walk from the entrance. It is easy to combine with the whale sharks and, from Santander, is within a short drive. At least one operator reports a monthly closure day, so check before you go rather than assume it is open.

For something less visited, Samboan, west along the coast from Oslob, has two more falls. Binalayan Falls, also called the triple-drop falls, is described as a short walk from the road. Aguinid Falls is a multi-tier canyoneering-style trek with a guide rather than a casual swim, and sources disagree on how many tiers are open, so confirm current access. Samboan is roughly half an hour’s drive from Oslob by most accounts. Fees quoted online conflict, so ask locally.

Roads, ferries and food

The coast drive, a day across the strait and where to eat.

Take it slowly

The coastal drive

The road along the southeast coast links Oslob, Santander and, farther north, Boljoon, which travel listings describe as home to one of Cebu’s oldest churches and a museum. It is a drive for stopping rather than racing: pull over for sea views and small-town markets. Cebu City to Oslob is usually put at around three to five hours by road, so allow margin if you are coming south.

Across to Negros

Liloan port day trips

The Liloan port in Santander is the Cebu end of the short ferry crossing to Sibulan on Negros, usually around half an hour. From there, Dumaguete and the boats toward Apo Island, popular for turtles and snorkelling, are within reach for a long day or an overnight. Our Liloan port guide explains how the crossing works.

Market and local sweets

Food

Oslob’s public market is best early, when fishermen sell their catch, and small stalls serve ready meals such as adobo, tinola and pancit. Santander is known for its tostado, a buttery baked cookie often eaten with coffee or hot chocolate and celebrated in an April festival. Back at the coast, G Bistro is open from 7 AM to 11 PM.
