Oslob · Sumilon Island
Sumilon Island day trip: boats, tides and the sandbar.
A short boat ride from Bancogon in Oslob brings you to a small marine-protected island with a sandbar that comes and goes with the tide. Here is how the day works, when to go, and how to fit it around the whale sharks.
The short version
A short crossing, a shifting sandbar, and a day that follows the tide.
Sumilon is a small island off Bancogon, in Oslob, in the Bohol Sea. Boats usually take about 15 to 20 minutes, and guides describe most visits as a day-tour package arranged through the island's resort rather than a casual hop on any boat. The sandbar is the star, but it depends on the tide, so timing shapes what you see. Details change, so confirm with the operator when you book.

How the day works
From Bancogon to the sandbar.
Get to Bancogon
The boats leave from the Bancogon port in Oslob. From Cebu City the road trip is long, and from G Boutique it is a short drive up the coast, which is one reason a night in Santander makes the day easier. Private transfers can be arranged on request, quoted separately.
Check in and take the boat
You usually check in at the mainland port, show your booking and ID, and are given a wristband or voucher for your scheduled transfer. The crossing takes around 15 to 20 minutes and can vary with sea conditions. Guides recommend an early boat for a full day, and note that the schedule can shift.
Walk to the sandbar
The sandbar is a short walk from the landing. At low tide a wide strip of white sand and very shallow water opens up. As the tide rises, clear seawater covers it. Because shape and size change with tides and currents, check the tide forecast the day before and ask the operator which hours are best.
Snorkel, swim or simply wade
Water around the island is clear and rich in marine life, and guides describe it as suitable for beginners on calm days. Snorkel gear is usually available to rent at the island, or bring your own. Stay in the zones staff point out, float flat over coral and avoid drop-offs and strong currents. Diving is a separate activity for certified divers.
What to bring
Pack for sun, salt and a short walk.
- Swimwear, a change of clothes and a quick-dry towel.
- Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses.
- A refillable water bottle and a dry bag or waterproof phone pouch.
- Cash in small bills, as ATMs are few and fees may be paid locally.
- Your booking confirmation and a valid ID.
- Your own mask and snorkel if you prefer a good fit.
Sanctuary etiquette
- The island is a marine reserve. Do not touch or stand on coral, and do not feed fish.
- Stay on marked paths and in the designated swim zones.
- Carry your rubbish out. Motorised water sports are not allowed in the sanctuary.
- Outside food may be restricted, and drone rules vary, so check your confirmation.
- Past overcrowding hurt the reefs, so access is managed. Rules and caps can change, so follow staff instructions.
With the whale sharks
Combining Sumilon with the Oslob whale sharks.
Many travellers watch the whale sharks first thing in the morning and then head to Bancogon for a late-morning boat and lunch on the island. It works, but each stage has queues and sea conditions, so leave generous time between them. Some tour operators sell the two together, sometimes with Tumalog Falls added, which makes a very long day when it starts in Cebu City.
Splitting the two across different mornings is calmer if you have a night or two in the area. Our Oslob whale sharks guide explains the morning, and the south Cebu itinerary shows how to link it with other stops.
Where to base yourself
Staying in Santander.
Santander sits at the southern tip of Cebu, a short way beyond Oslob. G Boutique Resort has 10 cabanas and The Beach Villa, which sleeps up to 25 guests, and it is around 15 minutes from the Oslob whale sharks. That makes an early boat from Bancogon realistic without a pre-dawn drive from Cebu City.
G Bistro on site is open daily from 7 AM to 11 PM, with the kitchen until 9 PM, so a sun-tired return can still end with dinner. Check-in is from 14:00 and check-out is at 11:00. We arrange transfers on request, quoted separately.
