The beach pool at G Boutique Resort, Santander, looking out to sea

South Cebu · Family guide

A family holiday in south Cebu, with kids.

A beachfront base in Santander, the Oslob whale sharks about fifteen minutes up the coast, and a pace that works for children: here is how a family holiday in the deep south of Cebu fits together.

The short answer

Keep the days short, the sea close and the plan flexible.

South Cebu rewards families who do one big thing a day and spend the rest on the beach. Santander sits at the southern tip of the island, so the whale sharks, a waterfall and a sandbar are all within reach of one base, and a swim, a pool and a proper meal are always a few steps from your door. This guide covers what to do, where to sleep, and the small practical things that make the trip easy with children. For reunions and whole-resort celebrations, see our separate page for family gatherings. Family reunions and gatherings.

What families do

Four things worth the effort.

Each of these suits a family when you pick one per day and start early.

The Oslob whale sharks

About fifteen minutes up the coast, in the early morning when the water is calmer and the queues are shorter. Be honest about your children: sources disagree about any minimum age, some operators asking for older children and others saying nothing, and young ones are normally expected to stay with an adult. Confirm the rules on the day. Confident swimmers and calm kids have the best time. Our Oslob guide covers the ground rules, including the ethics.

Sumilon sandbar

A boat ride of roughly half an hour from Oslob, according to tour listings, then a ribbon of white sand and clear shallows. It is an easy big-payoff outing for children, with no hiking and plenty of splashing. Watch the sun, as there is little shade.

Tumalog Falls

A misted cascade inland, about twenty-five minutes from the resort. You reach the entrance by road, then walk a short way. Tour listings warn the walk may not suit very young children or anyone with limited mobility, so check with your own children in mind.

The beach and the pool

The quiet days matter too. The resort has two beach pools, kayaks, canoes and snorkelling gear, and the shallows at the gate are clear and gentle. At dawn, green sea turtles sometimes graze the seagrass just off the shore. Children tend to remember this more than the tours.

Where to sleep

Cabanas for small families, the Beach Villa for big ones.

G Boutique Resort has ten cabanas in two kinds. The Deluxe Economy cabana is 18 sqm with a queen bed and a trundle and sleeps up to three, which suits a couple with one child. The Premium Cabana is 24 sqm, sleeps four across a king bed, a sofa bed and a futon, and has a private hot bathtub. It is on the second floor and reached by stairs, with no lift, which matters with a pushchair or a toddler.

For a larger family or two families together, the Beach Villa is the better fit: four bedrooms, 15 beds, four en-suite bathrooms plus a powder room, a full kitchen with a grill and its own pool. The base rate covers ten guests and the villa takes up to twenty-five. Children under six stay free and are not counted, while children aged 6 to 11 are charged per night. One of the four rooms is a group room with bunk beds, a trundle and bench beds, made for children.

Villa services are available on request, including a daytime nanny and evening babysitting, so the adults get an unhurried evening. They are confirmed and priced personally for your dates. We do not run a kids’ club, so bring your own games; the resort has a game room for rainy afternoons.

Meals

G Bistro is on site, so nobody is hungry for long.

G Bistro is the resort’s beachfront cafe, food and bar. It is open every day from 7 AM to 11 PM, with the kitchen serving until 9 PM. That makes a late breakfast after a dawn whale-shark swim easy, and an early dinner for tired children too. Breakfast is included with the cabanas. If you stay in the villa, a private chef or full board can be arranged on request.

Practical tips

Small things that make the days easier.

Travel time

Cebu City to Oslob is roughly 130 km and travel guides usually say three to five hours by road, depending on traffic. With children that is a long day, so many families break the journey with an overnight stay in the south. From Dumaguete, the ferry from Sibulan to Liloan takes around half an hour.

Boats and motion sickness

The strait can be choppy, particularly later in the day. If anyone gets queasy, choose morning departures, sit toward the middle of the boat, look at the horizon and ask your doctor or pharmacist about remedies before you travel. Calm mornings are also kinder to little swimmers.

Sun and heat

The sun is strong on the water and on the sandbar. Pack rash guards, hats and plenty of drinking water, and note that regular sunscreen is not allowed at the whale sharks, so cover up instead. Plan outings for the morning and keep afternoons for shade and the pool.

Season

The drier months, roughly November to May, tend to bring calmer seas, but conditions change from day to day. Ask us about the weather before you book a boat outing.

A sample three days

One outing a day, the beach for the rest.

  1. Day one

Arrive, swim, early dinner at G Bistro. Nothing planned.

  2. Day two

Whale sharks early if the children are ready, back for a late breakfast, then the pool and a nap in the afternoon.

  3. Day three

A boat to the Sumilon sandbar in the morning, or Tumalog Falls if the children enjoy a short walk, then the beach until sunset.
